because of the recent heat wave in toronto and the record power consumption, the propery manager at my building issued the following statement today.

"Oxford Properties has instituted the following measures to reduce the energy use at Bell Trinity Square by turning off unecessary lighting"

- Fountains ,Pond lights, Atrium grow lights (daytime only) , B1 art track lights , Atrium ground floor pole lights , Eaton tunnel fan , Track lighting shining over the pool , Hallway lights on ground floor from South to North tower , Bridge lighting in atrium

the irony is that if these lights are "unecessary", why do they have them and turn them on in the first place? does it make sense ot deliberately incur unecessary expenses?
during this power shortage, the ieso is also asking all ontarians to save power my doing their laundry and dishwashing at night, etc. this frees up power during the day and uses excess nuclear power available at night that would be otherwise wasted. during the day ontario burns coal or import power to meet power demand.

this makes a lot of sense. why doesn't the ieso should ask people to do their laundry at night all the time, not just during times when power is in short supply. less power use during the day means less coal burning. this means less smog, which would make the air cooler. cooler air means less people turn on their air conditioners, which in turn means less power use. its a perpetual motion machine.

on another matter, now that there is basically nobody in the office, i was given the option of moving to a window seat. nice... a promotion..
