my mandarin instructor earlier this year was pretty mediocre - to put it politely. in the middle of class she would constantly go on tangents - about her personal pseudo scientific views on health, medicine, the meaning of life, politics. if she wanted to try to talk about politics in
mandarin or if her views were interesting/intelligent/unique then i might be ok with it. her views would often be argued or reinforced by class members (in english). my social network - most of the people i regularly talk to, don't make up pseudoscientific arguments that make no sense. so while this was an interesting experience in hearing the thoughts of the "common people", i could really just get satellite and watch fox news.... the class cost me money. it was irritating to pay to hear poorly thought out opinions of random classmates . you can accuse me of being an elitist or not a man of the people, but quite frankly i am not really interested in hearing the thoughts of random people. i do read the letters in the toronto star, so i'm not totally bad.
anyways this story is pretty stupid, but thanks for reading my blog. at the end of the term, the teacher asked if i would be returning, in which i politely feigned interest, although i had no intention of doing so. isn't it easier/better to lie (stretch the truth) sometimes? anyways i bumped into the teacher on the subway. damn. i said hi and quickly moved away.
