1. i know several people who say that sometimes they manage to sit next to a stranger on the subway and have a good conversation. i believe that this is just random guys trying to get phone numbers. i've never had a random conversation on the subway because i try to avoid drunk people...
2. nobody makes eye contact on the subway. if i ever make eye contact, its to give someone my impression of a deathly stare. (btw, i have a no stare policy at men >6ft and >200lbs between the ages of 20 and 40)
3. during my rush hour commute i have a tendency to attract middle age/large people who like to invade my personal space. a good morning is if i get a seat next to a skinny person. a great one is if this skinny person is wearing clean clothes and has no scent.
friday morning rush hour. i'm reading my magazine. whenever i look up (several times), the skinny attractive asian girl who's my age that's in my personal space makes eye contact. its friendly. so i don't do anything. i read my magazine.
considering that i am in a relationship, i pose this question - should i have started a conversation? what would be my motivation for starting one? if it was a middle age women, i would probably be annoyed - like how i am at everyone else who's next to me on public transit.

Who's this skinny attractive asian girl who is in your personal space and you keep looking at? Maybe you should have moved or kept your eyes down, rather than keep looking at her? Or maybe you should have started a conversation to see where it took you...
It is a good question: What would be your motivation?
Why would you start a conversation with random girls, when you wouldn't with random guys? Would you care if I had a policy to only make conversations with random guys and not random girls on the street?
When random people talk to me about random things (i.e. not asking for directions) I just give a polite smile, or cut-eye, depending on the situation (i.e. babysitters playing I-Spy using my shoes for example vs. two guys making weird comments on the subway platform at 11:30PM and not a lot of people around), then I avoid further eye contact and/or move.

maybe you had something on your face which is why she was staring.
since your in a relationship and your posting this on your blog where you know your significant other might see..are you just trying to push her button?

I'm not saying that I think you shouldn't talk to girls that you meet, but isn't it kind of strange to actively pursue meeting girls on the TTC?
If you make friends with others through an activity (say dragonboat) or work, then that is a natural course of life. But chatting up random girls is sketchy to say the least.
