in general i try to avoid extensive religious discussions.
last week pope john paul II - head of the roman catholic church "ordered" that terry schiavo's feeding tube be re-inserted - opting to preserve her life indefinitely. today a feeding tube was inserted into pope john paul II. while there have been no reports that the pope is brain dead or in a coma, etc. the ultimate irony would be if the pope were to slip into a coma and be declared to be in the same state as terry schiavo. with the tube, a heart/lung machine, dialysis, they might be able to keep him alive for 15 + years - just like schiavo. how long would the dowager pope allow this to go on for? pulling the plug wouldn't mark the first time the church has contradicted itself.
this brings me to the subject or religious leaders giving "orders". the schaivo case. a sihk religous leader instructed Canadian MPs how to vote on same sex legislation. a Christian leader threated former PM Chretien with "eternal damnation". catholic leaders tried to influence john kerry's policy - re-enforcing the reason why americans do not elect catholic presidents (except kennedy). the funny thing is in all of these cases the "orders" were basically ignored - just like how PM paul martin tends to ignore my orders. the media should start asking me for orders.
